Genealogy

Dig Up Your Roots

There are many free genealogy web sites such as this one where you can find information on tracing your
  family hist
ory, researching vital documents, documenting your sources and get suggestions on some of the        genealogy books that will make an excellent beginning creating your own genealogy library.

There are several I would recommend, which I have in my own library such as, The Source, Red Book, Tracing your Family History, and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Genealogy. You can find these books at your local bookstore, library, or online at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.  You will also find free genealogy forms and pedigree charts in addition to printable genealogy  charts.

Whether we are seasoned genealogist or just getting starting we’re all after the same thing and that is to find the information that will flesh out our ancestors and bring the story of our family to life.  Just keep in mind thatpicture of pedigree chart piecing together your family history isn’t rocket science so don’t let it overwhelm you.

It’s been said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, so as your first step start with what you know.  When you’ve gone as far as you can, then talk to your relatives to fill in any gaps and don’t forget to ask them to help you identify the people in those old family photos.
Once you have done that you will want to get on line and start searching for your ancestors.  Ancestry.com, Family Search, Rootsweb.com, and Cyndi'sList are a few of thefree genealogy web sites available to help you in your search.  Each one of these web sites will have links to many of the  vital records you will need, such as census records, birth records, death records, military records, and marriage and divorce records free of charge.

While you are searching through the web sites, keep in mind that you may be able to find some valuablepicture of marriage record information from your local historical or genealogical society. They may not have any marriage and divorce records or free genealogy forms and pedigree charts, but they should have local directories and newspaper archives.  Occasionally, they will have lists of people buried in old cemeteries that are no longer being used.

To find your local society you can go on line and look up a genealogy directory named Society Hill that lists the addresses of thousands of genealogy societies.  We invite you to grow with us as you progress in searching for your family roots.  Good luck and good hunting.
